The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is two year, full time residential programme consists of seven terms, out of which six terms are for class room coaching and one term for On the Job Training (OJT) in an organization.
Curricula
The Curricula for the Two-Year PGDM Programme are designed to impart knowledge, specialized skills and positive attitudes for the students to become competent and responsible citizens. The curricula emphasize conceptual and analytical reasoning and provide students the insights into the business world and its environment. Importance is given to self-learning, creativity and continuous interaction with the faculty, practitioners and among students themselves.
A student has to undergo minimum 1200 classroom contact hours during the two years of his/her stay in the institute. According to the credit system, a student is awarded 4 credits on successful completion of 30 contact hours in a particular course. All courses in the 1st year are of 4 credits each, while in the 2nd year, an elective can be of 4 credits or 2 credits.
The First Year
During the first year of the programme , students learn basic concepts in the areas of Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Systems, Production & Operations Management, Economics etc. to name a few. These courses help the students appreciate the interdependence of the various functional areas and integrate them while addressing problems in the business context. These constitute the core courses. On completion of the core courses, students can pursue electives dealing with functional areas of their interest.
The first year academic work spreads over three terms (Term-I, II & III) of three months each, is a package of 24 compulsory courses designed to provide basic knowledge in concepts, tools and techniques in various functional areas.
After successfully completing the first year, a student is allowed to register for the second year of the program.
On-the-Job-Training (OJT)
At the end of the Term-III, all the students of the PGDM programme are required to undertake a project assignment in an organization for a period of around three months (usually April-June). The project is intended to give the students an opportunity to sharpen their knowledge and skills, develop better appreciation of the practical problems of business organizations in general and management in particular. The training project helps the students plan their professional career in the light of the practical experience gained during these three months. The performance of the students is continuously assessed during the training period and the students have to give presentations and the summer project report before a team of experts after the training.
The Second Year
The second year curriculum, which is spread over three terms, consists of two compulsory courses along with elective courses in different areas of interest (concentrations). However, designing and floating of any elective course is dependent on the factors like market demand, availability of faculty, and minimum number of students registering among others.
Students are required to opt for 14 electives apart from the two compulsory courses offered during this year. The electives will be offered in the following areas.
- Human Resource Management
- Marketing Management
- Finance Management
- Information Technology Management
- Production & Operations Management
- General Management
Thus, in all a student has to study 40 courses (27 core and 14 electives).
Students, who successfully complete the 2nd year along with a satisfactory completion of the On The Job Training and have a satisfactory conduct as certified by the Faculty shall be awarded the “Post Graduate Diploma in Management” Degree by KBS. |

| Programme Design |

Duration of Sessions
The classes are conducted on all working days except Sundays & Institute approved holidays. The normal timings of the classes are from 9:00 am to 5:30pm on each working day. Each session is of duration of 1 ½ hours. There will be a time gap of 30 minutes between two consecutive sessions to give students a break as well as accommodate the time spilled over from the previous session.
Normally the 4 credit Course will be of 20 sessions and the 2 Credit Course consists of 10 sessions.
Course Work and Area of Concentration
The courses offered during the two year program are classified into credits. The courses are either of 4 or 2 credit papers based on the amount of classroom interaction and student workload in off class room activity. As a thumb rule, for a 2 credit course for instance has 10 class room interactions of 15 hours and students are expected to put in 20 hours of work apart from this in off class room activity. Similarly for 4 credits it is of 20 class room interaction of 30 hours and off campus activity of 40 hours.
Students have to take a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 6 electives in Term-V and VI and the remaining in term VII.
Students need to select appropriate mix of courses according to his/her career preferences. It is compulsory for them to select at least one area of concentration from the functional areas. A student has the following choices
- Duel Areas of Concentration: In case a student chooses to have this, he or she has to do a minimum of 7 elective courses form both areas.
- Major/Minor: In case a student wishes to do this, he or she has to complete a minimum of 7 courses in the “Major” area and a minimum of 5 courses in his “Minor” area of concentration.
Only Major: Here a student has to do a minimum of 7 courses in an area. The rest can be spread across all the areas. |

| Pedagogy |

KBS uses a combination of various teaching methods such as cases, assignments, individual & group projects, computer aided instructions, group discussions, lectures, seminars, presentations by the students, and lectures by guest speakers from industry and government. The case method and the lecture method is the predominant pedagogical tools. This sharpens the analytical skills of the students and helps them to analyze problems from multi- functional perspectives. Faculty guides the students in developing the skills to defend arguments, and take decisions. |

| Registration for Courses |

First Year
All the newly admitted students are required to register for the 1st term on the registration day. All students for the 2nd and 3rd term are required to register on the first day of each term.
Second Year
In second year, the students are required to go for registration a day before the beginning of the classes. No students are allowed to attend the classes without registration.
Registration of Elective Courses
The list of electives that would be offered to in a particular term shall be made available to the students at least 2 months in advance of the term in which they would be offered. The students will be allowed 15 days for registering for a particular elective in the prescribed format available with the PGP office. Registration of electives shall not be entertained after the last date prescribed by the PGP office except in cases where the student is on authorised leave. However, designing and floating of any elective course is dependent on the factors like market demand, availability of faculty, minimum number of students registering etc. It is advisable that the students should choose and decide the electives after consulting with the concerned faculty, if they so desire. A faculty offering a particular elective may choose to prescribe qualification norms for students interested for the elective.
The electives floated in a term may be dropped or suspended after registration under the following conditions:
- Courses with registration of 20 or less students may be dropped as soon as the registration is complete. The students registered for such courses shall be asked to re-register for substitute courses.
- Courses with more than 20 nos. of students may also be dropped due to non-availability of the faculty for that particular course.
A student cannot withdraw from an elective in the middle of the term under any circumstances. |

| Attendance |

The Institute insists on 100% attendance for all sessions and the students are advised to be punctual in attending classes, examinations, submissions of assignments, term papers etc. A faculty has the right to deny attendance to any student who comes late to the class and also to refuse to accept/downgrade a student for late submissions of assignments, term papers etc. A student who absents himself for more than 50% of the class in any course shall be awarded a “F” grade and will be debarred from placement services.
Under exceptional circumstances, however, students may be permitted leave on grounds such as sickness and death in family etc. The student shall have to apply to the faculty whose sessions will be missed by him/her if he/she proceeds on leave. However, a student is not permitted to be on leave for more than 4 sessions of any course. The faculty’s prerogative in sanctioning of such leave is final. It will also be the concerned faculty’s prerogative to hold re-examinations for any examination missed during period of such leave.
In case a student is absent from a session without the required approval, he/she would be downgraded in that course. Each session of unauthorized absence will automatically deduct a 0.5-point in the grade point of a student that he/she may have secured in that course. Whereas, an instructor, taking two continuous sessions of a particular course and refuses to attend the second session if he/she is absent in the first session,(because no useful purpose will be served by attending the second session only), the student will end up by losing 1.0 point from his grade for such absence.
In case a student remains on leave on medical ground and thus absents himself/herself for more than five weeks in a term, then in such a case the student shall have to repeat the courses. However, if the student remains absent on medical ground for less than or equal to 5 weeks in a term, he/she shall have to undergo summer classes in such courses, take up a comprehensive make-up examination (s) and should obtain qualifying grade (s) for promotion to the 2nd year for award of the degree. |

| Evaluation System |

KBS follows a system of continuous evaluation. The evaluation of a particular paper may consist of the following items:
- Quiz(s)
- Assignment(s)
- Group/ Individual Project(s)/Term Papers
- Class participations
- Mid Term Examination
- End Term Examination
Every course shall have an end term examination. The other items will be decided by the faulty as per the requirement of the course. However, the details of the evaluation will be provided to each student at the start of the course. However, the distribution of marks among the various components shall be decided by individual faculty. One or more components may be dropped based on course requirement by the faculty after due information to the PGP office and students concerned. The End Term Examination shall be for a minimum of 30 marks |

| Examinations |
| |
All students have to attend all the prescribed components of the examinations and the term examinations without exception. The schedule for these examinations will be announced at the start of the programme.
Re-examinations for term examinations shall be held only if the student has been granted leave of absence by the concerned faculty whose examination has been missed as under clause 5.2 of these Rules.
All applicable rules for normal examination shall apply to re-examinations.
In case a student has requisite attendance and obtains a “F” grade in a term, then subject to approval of the appropriate authority, an opportunity may be provided to such student to improve his/her grade in maximum two courses, provided an application to this effect is received from the student not later than 10 days of publication of the result. Since it is an opportunity for improvement, grade to be awarded in such case shall be maximum “C” grade.
The student seeking improvement in the grade shall have to pay @ Rs.1000/- per course
All students are advised to note that Management education is not only what they learn in classes but also how they conduct themselves in all spheres of life. In this connection the decorum at the examination hall and the sanctity of the examinations are to be maintained at all costs. Towards this end certain ground rules have to be obeyed by all concerned in the examination hall. These are as follows

The students should bring the identity card and show to the checking authority as and when required.

The students should occupy the seats allotted to them as per the seating chart before 15 minutes of commencement of the examination and should not leave the examination hall without prior permission of the invigilator.

Mobile Phones/pagers any and other electronic communication devices are banned in the examination hall. The students are advised not to bring them into the hall. Possession of such devices shall be construed as intension to malpractice.

No paper, books or notes are allowed into the examination hall, except when it is declared ”Open Book” before the start of the examination. All examinations are “Closed Book” unless otherwise specified on the question paper. Exchange/borrowing of books, notes, papers (in case of open book) is not permitted. The students should carry texts/notes as permitted by the faculty concerned in an Open Book system.

A student shall not exchange any remark, gesture with other students, pass, receive or see answer papers of others in the examination hall. Such activity shall be construed as a malpractice. Any student who wilfully gives assistance will be considered as guilty of malpractice as the one who receives it. Borrowing of stationary is in the examination hall is strictly prohibited.

Strict silence should be maintained in the examination hall. No student will indulge in any argument with the invigilator/examinee or conduct any joke/fun show during an examination. Such student who involved in these activities will be asked to leave the hall immediately and should be booked for malpractices.

All answer scripts should be handed over to the invigilator on duty either when a student has finished answering the paper or when the allotted time for the examination is over whichever is earlier. Handing of the answer scripts to the invigilator will be the responsibility of the student.

All students shall be shown the corrected answer scripts by the faculty for them to peruse and get proper feedback.
On-the-Job-Training (OJT)
OJT is an integral part of the two year PGDM programme of the institute and no student will be exempted from this. At the end of the OJT, a student has to submit a report to the project guide at the Company where he/she is undergoing a training and also to the Area at the institute. The student has to also present the work he/she has done to his/her faculty guide who will evaluate the work and award “very Good”, “good”, “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory” ratings to the work. The student shall be awarded the PGDM degree only if he/she obtains at least a “satisfactory” rating of his project work from both the company guide as well as the Area. In case a student obtains an “Un Satisfactory” rating from either of them then he/she has to repeat the OJT and obtain “Satisfactory” rating before he/she can be awarded the degree. A detailed set of rules of conduct on OJT shall be circulated before the student leaves for OJT. |
